They make chocolate and lots of chocolate-based goodies at this place, which is located in Sopron. Don't miss it if you're a chocolate lover :-)

Sopron is a picturesque town that dates back to Roman times. Very much worth a visit (also for the chocolate factory ;-)

The Esterházy palace is sometimes called the “Hungarian Versailles” and in the past was the residence of the Esterházy family. It is characterised by music and pomp and Joseph Haydn was active here for two decades while in the service of the Esterházy family.

The early Classicist Széchenyi palace in Nagycenk dates from the second half of the 18th century and is a magnificent specimen of manor-house architecture in Hungary. It is a monument to the Széchenyi family, a family of politicians, statesmen, prelates, and soldiers.

Perhaps the most special attraction of Sopron is the Taród Castle, also called Fool's Castle and Owl Castle. For the most part, it is the 50-year work of one single man, István Taródi, who used 150-200 railway cars of stones and bricks in the course of the construction until his death in 2010.

Neusiedler See or in Hungarian "Fertő" is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe, straddling the Austrian–Hungarian border. It's about 36 km (22 mi) long and 6-12 km wide. It is shallow, but very suitable for windsurfing and canoeing. There are extensive nature reserves (see section on the Nemzeti Park below) and also beaches. Podersdorf is the most popular beach town on the lake. During our stay, there is a large festival that may be fun to visit.

Hegyko - village and art festival
Hegyko is a village close to the Neusiedler See. It is a World Heritage Site and part of the Fertő-Hanság National Park, it has thermal baths and a beautiful environment. Take a look here for various attractions in its surroundings.
During our stay there is an art festival.
We haven't been there, so can't recommend, but this is the largest amusement park in Austria, about 45 minutes drive from the castle.

This is a large nature area that offers a variety of guided tours, including a 3-hour / 6 km canoe tour of the living world of the reed beds, channels, and reed-encompassed inner lakes on the west side of Lake Fertő.
Here is the entire program of guided tours.

Wineries
The Sopron region used to be an important wine region until wars and world events diminished its role. However, during the past few decades, a new generation of winemakers has moved in and is now producing still little-known but excellent wines. This site gives a nice overview of the history of wine making in the region and has a list of the 8 top winemakers and a map If there's interest, we can arrange a visit to one or more wineries.
